News February 2011

The closure of OHS courses in Australia continues. The well established Center for Safety Science at the University of New South Wales has closed. The OHS degree at the University of Western Sydney has closed. A number of the PhD hygienists in Australia earned their PhD’s there. However, the new Occupational Hygiene offereings at the University of Woolongong are now accredited by the Australian Institute of Occupational Hygienists and is doing well.

On the home front, my teaching laboratories at Griffith University have been turned into offices for another research centre, so I have lost most of my industrial ventilation capability and my research lab is mothballed (in my office). At their height, my occupational hygiene teaching laboratories were said to be the best in Australia. Such is life.

News Nov 2007 – new Banner’
This is now out of date – I am constructing several banners that show in rotation. October 2009.
I hope you like the new banner showing some of my work. Unfortunately I cannot show photos from other workplaces. They are much more interesting.
The photos in the banner are:

  1. 2002 – PIMEX visual exposure monitoring (VEM) looking at the effect of work practices on welding fume exposures (in Sweden)
  2. Fluorescence trials in the new portable fluorescence facility – still being commissioned
  3. Demonstrating air flows and capture into a slot hood on the “Green Machine” – a full scale industrial ventilation teaching and research rig
  4. The GloveTest faculty – an automated eight channel permeation rig for testing polymer gloves ad chemical suits
  5. Wind tunnel trials looking at the effect of cross drafts on hood capture. Smoke is used to visualise the flows and SF6 tracer gas is used to quantify the capture efficiency
